Inspiration

The main inspiration for this project came from the belief that environmental education should start at a young age, in a playful, interactive, and inclusive way. I was struck by children’s natural curiosity and their ability to become true ambassadors for change when properly guided. The success of initiatives like “La main à la pâte” in France and “Eco-Schools” internationally showed that active learning, challenges, and creativity are powerful drivers for lasting awareness.

What it does

Planet Kids Ecolo is an educational and interactive website for children and teenagers focused on environmental awareness. It offers fun, multilingual games, animated videos, and real-life eco challenges to help kids learn about protecting the planet. The site tracks user progress, rewards achievements, and encourages community sharing and collaboration. All content is reviewed by experts, and the platform is safe, accessible on various devices, and suitable for offline use.

How we built it

We built Planet Kids Ecolo as a fun, interactive website for kids and teens to learn about the environment. We focused on user-friendly design, multilingual content (Games, Global Challenges,videos and subtitles), and engaging educational games and challenges. The site is safe, accessible on all devices, and includes parental controls and expert-approved content. We also prioritized sustainable web practices to reduce environmental impact.

Challenges we ran into

  • Balancing fun and educational value: It was important to ensure that fun did not overshadow learning, and that each activity had real educational value.
  • Accessibility and inclusion: Adapting the platform for children with disabilities or from disadvantaged backgrounds required special efforts (multilingual, audio reading, simplified ergonomics).
  • Data protection: Implementing secure registration, effective moderation, and GDPR/CNIL compliance was a major technical and organizational challenge.
  • Local content: Gathering resources on local biodiversity and ecological heritage and making them attractive to children required close collaboration with field actors.

Innovative Use of AI Tools: We integrated Bolt IA for badges and interactive features, Tavus for AI-generated video creation, and ElevenLabs for realistic multilingual voiceovers.

Community Engagement: The platform encourages children to take eco-friendly actions, share their achievements, and collaborate with others.

Multiplatform Compatibility: Planet Kids Ecolo works on PCs, tablets, and mobile devices, with offline access to key content.

Sustainable Web Practices: We prioritized eco-friendly design and hosting to minimize our environmental impact.

What we learned

Accessibility Matters: Offering content in multiple languages, with subtitles and audio descriptions, significantly broadens our reach and ensures inclusivity for all users.

Safety and Trust are Essential: Parental controls and expert-reviewed content are crucial for building trust with families and protecting young users.

Community and Collaboration Boost Impact: Encouraging kids to share their achievements and work together on eco-challenges creates a sense of belonging and amplifies the project’s positive effects.

AI Enhances Experience: Tools like Bolt IA, Tavus, and ElevenLabs made it easier to personalize content, generate engaging videos, and provide realistic multilingual voiceovers.

What's next for Planet Kids Ecolo

We plan to expand our educational content and accessibility, grow our community, and use more advanced AI tools. We are seeking funding to help realize these goals and to make Planet Kids Ecolo available for use by global organizations in environmental management and education.
