Inspiration

Our inspiration came from observing how strongly children are influenced by the digital world around them. We noticed that kids don’t just passively consume content—they actively imitate it, whether it’s from games, videos, or characters they look up to. This made us realize how powerful that influence can be in shaping behavior. At the same time, we saw a disconnect when it came to climate education. While children are often taught about environmental issues, those lessons don’t always translate into everyday habits. This gap between awareness and action stood out to us. Instead of viewing screen time as a problem, we saw it as an opportunity. We wanted to create something that uses the same engaging and immersive elements kids already enjoy, but redirects them toward building positive, real-world behaviors that can have a lasting impact.

What it does

Planet Heros is an interactive app designed to help children build environmentally friendly habits through engaging mini-games and real-world actions. The app focuses on areas like water conservation, energy use, and sustainable behavior. Through gameplay, children complete challenges such as saving water, turning off lights, and making eco-friendly choices. These actions are reinforced with rewards, levels, and character progression, allowing users to feel like “heroes” helping the planet. The goal is to move beyond awareness and create consistent, real-life behavior change.

How we built it

We started by conducting research on child behavior, habit formation, and the effectiveness of gamification. We also reflected on personal observations and informal conversations with children, parents, and peers to understand how kids interact with technology. Using these insights, we designed the core structure of the app, including: a reward-based system to encourage repetition, simple and interactive mini-games focused on real-world actions, and a progression system that builds motivation over time. We then developed a working prototype and structured the user experience to be simple, engaging, and accessible for children.

Challenges we ran into

One of the biggest challenges was balancing education and engagement. It was important to ensure the app was not only informative but also genuinely fun, as children are unlikely to engage with something that feels like traditional learning. Another challenge was simplifying complex environmental issues into concepts that are easy for children to understand and act on. We had to focus on small, actionable behaviors rather than overwhelming users with too much information. We also considered accessibility and inclusivity, ensuring the idea could work across different age groups and backgrounds.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

We are proud of creating a solution that is not only creative but also grounded in research and real-world behavior. Instead of simply raising awareness, our concept focuses on building habits, which creates long-term impact. We successfully combined: behavioral psychology, gamification, and climate education into a single, cohesive solution. Most importantly, we developed an idea that feels realistic, scalable, and capable of making a measurable difference.

What we learned

Through this project, we learned how powerful behavior and psychology are in solving real-world problems. We realized that simply providing information is not enough—people need motivation, structure, and engagement to change their actions. We also gained a deeper understanding of how technology can be used as a tool for positive impact rather than just entertainment. Additionally, we learned how to think critically about implementation, scalability, and real-world feasibility.

What's next for Planet Heros

Moving forward, we plan to further develop the prototype and test it with real users, including children, parents, and educators. Gathering feedback will allow us to refine the experience and improve its effectiveness. We also aim to work with app developers and explore partnerships with schools, community programs, and organizations to pilot the app in real environments. In the long term, we envision expanding the platform with more features, localized content, and broader environmental themes. Our goal is to scale Planet Heros into a tool that can be integrated into education systems and help shape a generation that actively contributes to a more sustainable future.
