Inspiration

After watching friends overspend on cross-state moves—forgetting stair fees, parking permits, or hidden fuel costs—I knew there had to be a better way. As someone who’s moved 5 times in 3 years, I wanted a tool that cuts through the guesswork and gives clear, actionable financial insights for relocations.

What it does

The MovingCost Calculator is a free web tool that lets users input their move details (origin/destination, home size) to get a full breakdown of professional moving quotes vs DIY costs. It highlights easy-to-miss expenses, compares cost of living between cities, and delivers a clear financial verdict on whether a move is worthwhile.

How we built it

I started by mapping out core user needs (transparency, simplicity, accuracy) and designing a responsive UI in Figma. Using React and TailwindCSS, I built modular components for each section—input forms, cost breakdowns, and visualizations. I integrated GSAP for smooth animations (number counters, chart reveals) and Chart.js to turn raw data into intuitive bar/pie charts for cost of living comparisons.

Challenges we ran into

The biggest hurdle was balancing visual flair with performance—animations and real-time calculations slowed load times initially. I optimized by lazy-loading non-critical components and streamlining calculation logic. Another challenge was designing intuitive data visualization that’s easy to parse without overwhelming users.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

Creating a tool that’s both visually engaging and functionally robust—users can get a complete financial picture in 3 steps, no login required. The animated number counters and color-coded ROI badges make complex financial data accessible, and early testers said it helped them save ~20% on their move budgets.

What we learned

I deepened my understanding of UX design for financial tools—clarity and trust are key. I also learned to prioritize performance in animated UIs and how to translate real-world financial logic into clean, maintainable code. Most importantly, I realized how small, often-missed costs add up, and how critical it is to surface them for users.

What's next for this project

I plan to add regional pricing adjustments (tailored to US/EU markets), integrate user-submitted moving company quotes for more accuracy, and add a mobile app version. I also want to include a "moving checklist" feature to pair cost insights with actionable to-dos, making it a one-stop shop for relocation planning.
