Inspiration

Our inspiration for this app, called Plan-It, stems from our shared passion for exploration and discovering new places. We often found ourselves struggling with the process of planning trips efficiently, trying to make the most out of our time while exploring new destinations. This common challenge sparked the idea to create an innovative solution that simplifies the trip planning process and enhances the overall travel experience.

What it does

Plan-It is a comprehensive itinerary app designed to streamline the trip planning experience. It empowers users to effortlessly create detailed plans for their upcoming adventures while providing tools to map out their journey. The core idea revolves around helping users organize their itinerary effectively, integrating seamlessly with Google Maps into a calendar to ensure a smooth planning process.

How we built it

The development of Plan-It involved a combination of technologies to provide a seamless user experience. For the front-end, we utilized React which allowed us to create an interactive and responsive interface that enhances the overall usability of the application. On the back-end, our technology stack centered around Firebase for a platform for real-time data synchronization and user authentication. Leveraging the Google Places API, we enriched the app with location details and the integration of the Google Maps API visually enhanced the mapping functionality.

Challenges we ran into

We encountered challenges in effectively managing the front-end layout and in extracting and manipulating data from the Google Maps API while integrating it with Firebase.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

We are proud of successfully exploring Firebase for the first time and designing an aesthetically pleasing login page and overall theme. We are also proud of improving our front-end skills. We all definitely have become more comfortable using React within this short amount of time.

What we learned

Throughout the project, we gained valuable insights and skills in various areas, including implementing Google authentication, React development, integrating Firebase functionality, proficiently handling data insertion and extraction processes, and utilizing APIs to enhance our application.

What's next for Plan-It

With more time, we would like to incorporate a visual timeline onto which you can drag and drop locations/events, making reorganizing your itinerary easier. We would also like to allow the user to select the mode of transportation between each location of the itinerary, displaying the average time it would take based on the time of day. Some other potential features include allowing the user to select a time slot and receive recommendations on restaurants, attractions, etc. open during that time, and allowing the user to import and export itineraries from and to their Google Maps bookmarked collections.
