Inspiration
Public notices, hospital discharge instructions, financial terms, and municipal forms are routinely written at a 14th-grade bureaucratic reading level, locking out millions of readers who need clear action steps. PlainPage turns plain-language editing into a verifiable, deterministic studio in the browser.
What it does
- Five Published Readability Formulas with Visible Arithmetic: Paste or load any text to compute Flesch Reading Ease, Flesch-Kincaid Grade Level, Gunning Fog Index, SMOG Index, and New Dale-Chall Score, with word, syllable, complex-word, and sentence counts shown step by step so every number can be checked by hand.
- Jargon Radar & Editable Dictionary: Highlights legal, medical, and bureaucratic jargon inline with plain-English replacements.
- Deterministic Plain-Language Rewrite Bench & Word-Level Diff: Splits long multi-clause sentences, converts passive constructions to active voice, and replaces complex words from a conservative synonym dictionary, then renders a side-by-side word-level diff and re-scores the rewritten text against your target audience grade band.
- Built-in Civic & Healthcare Samples: Demonstrates a real municipal notice dropping from Grade 14.8 down to Grade 2.4 with full meaning preserved.
How we built it
Built in zero-dependency vanilla JavaScript (engine.js, render.js, app.js) running 100% locally in the browser with zero network calls. Verified by 80 automated unit and DOM smoke tests (node --test) checking every readability formula against published worked examples.
