Inspiration
Many learners are not locked out of education because they lack ability or motivation. They are locked out because the learning material is written in language that is too technical or difficult to understand independently.
We focused on this narrow barrier: complex educational language.
What we built
Plain English Learning transforms difficult educational material into a beginner-friendly learning experience. A learner provides a lesson, and the app generates a clear explanation, relevant key concepts, simple definitions of difficult terms, an everyday analogy, and a short understanding check.
The goal is not to replace the original material, but to create a bridge that helps a learner understand it.
How it works
- The learner provides educational material.
- AI analyzes the material.
- The app generates a plain-English explanation grounded in the original content.
- Important technical terms are explained simply.
- An everyday analogy helps connect the concept to something familiar.
- A short quiz checks whether the learner understood the material.
Why it matters
Instead of asking learners to already understand the vocabulary before they can learn the subject, Plain English Learning makes the language itself less of a barrier.
What we learned
We learned that accessibility does not always require a large platform or many features. Removing one specific barrier well can make an existing learning resource much more usable.
