Inspiration
Considering the recent surge in the housing crisis within Canada, we decided to build a platform that connects people to the communities of their choice. We aim to place people from all walks of life, whether you are a cash-strapped student, an ailing senior citizen, or a family man, your place is your choice! :)
What it does
PlaceMe is the website that lets you get a gist of the society you could be a part of, and also allows you to sort by these crucial features: House Price, Crime Rate, and Convenience Score! But, wait a minute…what on Earth is the Convenience Score?! It’s our ingenious score devised on the proximity of basic necessities in a neighbourhood (grocery stores, parks, stations, and much more!) as well as the accessibility to transport and transit. We offer two services: PlaceMe and BriefMe. PlaceMe is our premier service that allows us to place you in the best neighbourhood possible (Woohoo!) based on your preferences. BriefMe briefs you about all the stuff you need to know about a community you have already decided on. Choose one and the process is done! (#Rhyming).
How we built it
How we built it? • JavaScript • HTML • CSS • Figma • Data Analysis
Challenges we ran into
SO MANY!!! The primary challenge was thinking about the IDEA: coming up with a solution that helps solve a real-world problem and building something that helps EVERYONE!
LIMITED DATA!!! It was quite cumbersome to get accurate, up-to-date and reliable data for all the neighbourhoods. Moreover, it took a long time to implement a sorting algorithm that would produce unbiased data (to a large extent!). With no hands-on experience of working with CSV files in JavaScript, as well as less experience with backend web development we had to meticulously work with inputting and outputting the desired data!. We also implemented a dynamic dropdown box for inputting ranks in the PlaceMe service which was quite the task. Another major challenge we faced was crafting the aesthetic appeal of the website. We used Figma for this purpose, but we had issues with the CSS it produced. Ultimately, it was collaboration that culminated in the successful completion of the project.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
• Working towards an innovative solution that tackles a real world issue! • Working with delimited data in Javascript and producing custom output based on the user input. • Building something!
What we learned
Developed a strong grasp on Javascript by using data in the backend. Learned data analysis skills and techniques and learned to build visually appeasing designs through Figma and CSS.
What's next for PlaceMe
• Integration of Interactive Map GUI. • Scaling the services globally. • Incorporating factors such as parking, restaurants, gyms, etc. • Collaborating with big companies such as Kijiji for house listings, etc.
