Inspiration:
College students, and WPI students in particular, face increasingly difficult and rigorous courses. Collaboration is an essential tool for producing success in any academic environment. Students don't always have the opportunity to collaborate with their peers, especially in light of the COVID-19 pandemic.
What It Does:
Links up students in the same class. Application assists users in getting in touch with other users who input the same entry data. Email addresses are provided to students who meet the same criteria, hence they will have the ability to connect one-on-one or in a group. Users data is stored in a database. For security, this data is encrypted.
How We Built It:
The project has 2 components. The functional component (the guts) was made with IntelliJ with Java. The user interface component (the skin) was made with the prototyping software Marvel.
Challenges We Ran Into:
Ran into challenge with users info not saving. Solved this by creating a data base with a .txt file. The application’s design process involved various safety & privacy considerations. Overcame challenge by building encryption / decryption system.
Accomplishments That We're Proud Of:
Completed both an aesthetically pleasing prototype and a fully functional application.
What We Learned:
We learned a lot about databases and encryption/decryption. We learned to think about a product from the perspective of the users.
What's Next For LinkedUp:
Although our application is currently geared towards WPI students, we plan to expand our operations to cover all colleges, universities and institutions. Another feature, we would like to add is in-app communication, via a text message widget.
