Inspiration
We were inspired by the active elements of RTS and strategic elements of Tower Defense. We combined these two genres to fit a new mobile strategy genre.
How we built it
We used Adobe InDesign & Photoshop to create our four artifacts. Thrill built out a working prototype of the game in Unity to validate our idea and create grounded mockups. PHIA used Clip Studio Paint to draw out concept art, visualizing how the characters and items could come to life.
Challenges we ran into
Settling on a good game concept was tougher than we thought. The majority of our time was spent creating a solid game concept that fit well into the submission category while bringing something totally new. We also spent a lot of time playing mobile games to get direct inspiration about what works and doesn't work for the format.
At first, we were using Google Docs and Photoshop for our documents. There were a lot of formatting issues with this. Very quickly, it became clear that reworking everything in Adobe InDesign was a better path.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
We did not use any generative AI.
We are happy with the production scope, in-detail mockups, and original art. We are confident that everything we have provided could be taken and immediately put into production as a successful mobile title.
What we learned
As game developers, we often overlook the importance of good documentation. Focusing solely on Game Design made us approach our process in a totally new way. In the future, we will be using the skills we learned during this competition in every future project we pursue.
What's next for The Last Lighthouse
If we place in the competition, we may be able to start true production on the project as an actual game for the Meta Horizon platform.
