Inspiration

"Gen-Z (ages 16–24) report higher levels of loneliness than any other age group." — Forbes

Despite being the most digitally connected generation, many Gen Z individuals still struggle to find meaningful real-world connections. 91.4% of our Gen-z respondents in our survey (n=35) said they wish they could relive a meaningful shared moment, and 63% intentionally disconnect from their devices, craving deeper, present experiences with others (Relevant Magazine).

Sociologist Émile Durkheim described collective effervescence as the powerful emotional energy people feel when gathering in shared experiences. These moments, at concerts, festivals, and community events, create a sense of belonging that goes beyond the individual. Yet there are no tools today that make this feeling visible or repeatable.

SYNC was built to change that. By helping users discover events that match their mood and connect with others seeking the same experience, Sync turns digital connection into real-life belonging.

What it does

SYNC helps users move from experiencing events individually to understanding the collective emotional energy of the room. The app visualizes the synchronization of emotional energy between people during social events, matches users to nearby events that fit their vibe, and connects them with like-minded people at those events.

How we built it

We designed SYNC entirely in Figma, starting with low-fidelity wireframes and iterating into a polished, human-centered experience using FigmaMake for animations and interactive flows.

Challenges we ran into

Connecting all screens to FigmaMake proved difficult within the time constraints. We prioritized the most critical user flows and focused FigmaMake's animations on the screens that mattered most.

Accomplishments we're proud of

Shipping a complete, cohesive app from concept to interactive prototype, fully grounded in real user research and a compelling design vision.

What we learned

  • The importance of human connection as a design north star
  • How to build a cohesive product experience across a team
  • How to work effectively and asynchronously under pressure

What's next for Sync

  • Expanding event curation with more personalized recommendations
  • Adding in-event activities and shared experiences within a group
  • Deepening the collective effervescence visualization over time
