Inspiration
Our product was inspired by the WWF's carbon emissions calculator, which is unfortunately only available in the UK.
What it does
Our product predicts the carbon emissions of the user based upon a series of survey questions, independent of the country of the user.
How we built it
We found emissions data for a whole host of different daily considerations. For example, we found out how changes in diet, transportation, and house type change carbon emissions. We then had to found out how these different values varied by country, and account for that too.
Challenges we ran into
GCEC does not return entirely accurate results for users in LEDCs. This is simply because a lot of the data we used to create the program is not available for developing countries. Hopefully, an increase in available information will allow us to update the program in the coming years.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
GCEC implements a Python-based backend API, and a React.js-based frontend. This is the first time we've combined languages for the frontend and backend like this, and it was a very gratifying experience to get it all to work together.
