AVERA (Automated Vessel Emission and Route Analysis)
Inspiration
For vessel and port operations, it is essential to have up-to-date data available to ease decision-making from timetable to routes. From an environmental policy standpoint, operators need to minimize or mitigate emissions from their operations. Inspiration for our project is providing combined insights on both operations and emission data in a centralized dashboard.
What it does
Provide a platform for operators to monitor and understand emissions in relation to multiple variables from routes to vessel types.
How we built it
We have mapped the voyage emission information and vessel particulars to analyze the emission per type of vessel. Data were taken from blob files stored in azure and azure postgresql database. Preprocessed data were inserted into a new database which were then used for visualization and modelling.
Challenges we ran into
We had a hard time in accessing the data for most of the time, the connection keeps on failing. The setup of the development environment also took time due to package version issues.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
Completing a prototype data processing for vessel and emission data
What we learned
We learned how to utilize Azure Cloud
What's next for AVERA
Implementation and integration of machine learning models for route and timing optimization recommendations. Further, automate the process of data extraction and visualization vessel info and emission data.
