Inspiration
This prototype draws inspiration from [link] https://www.linkedin.com/feed/update/urn:li:activity:7211380597242404865/ Prototype, demonstrated during XR Bootcamp’s Prototype Week 2 Phase. In Lorenzo’s project, users could move existing furniture meshes around. Building on that idea, I wondered: “What if we could design an entire room from scratch in miniature form before scaling it up to full size?” This approach would let users see the entire layout at once and make quick adjustments without needing to move through the full-scale environment.
What it does
Room Scanning: The application scans the user’s real-world room. Miniature Model: A small-scale, “miniature” version of the scanned room appears in front of the user. Furniture Placement: From a menu, the user can select furniture objects and place them into this miniature environment. Scaling Up: Once satisfied with the arrangement in miniature form, the user can scale the room back to its full size to see how it looks in real proportions. By allowing users to review the entire design at once, the prototype speeds up the interior design process and reduces back-and-forth adjustments.
How we built it
I used Unity and the Meta Presence Platform to bring the concept to life. Unity’s 3D capabilities and the Meta Presence toolkit provided an easy way to scan rooms, place virtual objects, and switch between miniature and full-scale environments.
Challenges we ran into
Spawning the Miniature Room: Initially, generating a smaller version of the user’s room seemed challenging. However, once we devised a workflow in Unity for scaling and positioning the meshes, this turned out to be simpler than expected.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
Clear Proof of Concept: Though still basic, the prototype clearly demonstrates the idea of switching between miniature and full-scale layouts. Efficient Interior Design Workflow: We validated the concept that transitioning between different scales helps visualize and refine interior designs more quickly and effectively.
What we learned
Meta Presence Platform: Gained hands-on experience and learned the do’s (and don’ts) of working within this AR/VR ecosystem. Project Management: Discovered new ways to streamline development and the importance of avoiding certain pitfalls in the project pipeline.
What's next for Place Furniture in Your Room
Enhanced Furniture Library: Integrate Sketchfab API to give users a wider range of furniture models. User Collaboration: Investigate ways for multiple users to collaborate in real time on the same room layout.
