Pixzle — Turning Reddit Posts into Playable Puzzles

Inspiration

I’ve spent the last few years building Pixzle as an iOS mobile puzzle game. I love the idea of turning ordinary images into quick little interactive challenges.

As a mobile developer of over 15 years, and a dad with 1000’s of pictures on my phone (and two kids that love doing puzzles), I built Pixzle as a way to teach my kiddos a little bit about programming and also to give them something fun to do on long car rides.

When I saw the Reddit Daily Games Hackathon I immediately thought, Oh man I could totally make Pixzle for Reddit since Devvit supports React! I had always wanted to rewrite Pixzle in a different language and platform, and this hackathon gave me the reason.

What It Does

Pixzle transforms Reddit image posts into interactive sliding puzzles…

In a world where we scroll past photos in seconds, Pixzle brings presence and play back into artwork and memories.

Whether it's a sunset, a pet’s silly face, or your child’s latest masterpiece — solving a Pixzle means spending real time with the details you love: the curve of a smile, the way shadows fall, the textures and colors in the background of a landscape.

Solve times are tracked per user, so communities can have fun competing for top scores!

Users can:

  • Upload an image
  • Crop it to a perfect square
  • Publish it as a playable puzzle post
  • Compete for fastest solve times
  • View live leaderboards
  • Play a rotating Daily Puzzle

Instead of static content, each post becomes an interactive game.

What I Learned

This project stretched me technically.

  • Built my first full solo production React app
  • Learned Devvit’s architecture and deployment model
  • Implemented image cropping, dynamic UI gradients, leaderboard persistence
  • Designed state-driven game logic for deterministic puzzle behavior
  • Agentic coding with ChatGPT Codex 5.2

Challenges

  • Designing a clean Upload -> Crop -> Post flow inside Reddit constraints
  • Handling image scaling and square enforcement consistently
  • Keeping the UI polished while working within Devvit’s boundaries
  • I only had 10 days to do this… got it in at the last second! ;)
