Inspiration

Nearly 75% of kids ask for a pet during their childhood, but few understand the reality: food isn’t free, vet visits are mandatory, and responsibility never pauses. That is why I built Pixel Pets to bridge this very gap in our community. Pixel Pets is more than a simulation, it’s a living system where every decision impacts your pet’s health and your realtime budget.

What it does

PixelPets is a virtual pet simulator integrated with an economy to help push kids. There are many features like creating multiple pets, taking care of it using actions, using AI powered quizzes to earn money, get achievements for doing good, and leaderboards for competition.

How I built it

The project is built using a modern full-stack architecture:

Frontend: React and TypeScript for a responsive UI.

Backend: Supabase for realtime database management and user authentication.

AI Integration: Google Gemini powers the dynamic quiz system, tailoring questions to the user's progress.

Challenges I ran into

Our biggest challenge was integrating the AI powered questions as it required an extensive amount of research into APIs.

Accomplishments that I'm proud of

I am incredibly proud of creating a grounded simulation that has helped kids prosper their financial literacy. This game has also helped at least 3 students in my school achieve to get pets of their own from their parents.

What I learned

Building PixelPets taught me how to bridge the gap between Computer Science and Financial Literacy. I also learned many modern web development tools like React and full stack architecture like Supabase that I can use in the workspace later.

What's next for PixelPets

The next phase is to add social media integration and a multiplayer marketplace with cosmetics. I want to expand my game as far as I can using YouTube, Instagram, and TikTok as well as let users collect rare items that they can trade with other players. However, there will be no monetization.
