Inspiration
Tamagotchi was a big inspiration. I wanted to create something retro and fun, but also tied to fitness and healthy habits. With the rise of Strava and running clubs, I thought why not blend the two?
What it does
It is a social game that encourages people to get active in the real world. Sync your Strava workouts to earn coins, then use those coins to buy resources like food, rest, and cleanliness to stay alive. Compete with friends on a shared leaderboard, join community challenges, and see how long you can keep your pet alive. Or use those coins on cosmetic skins to show off to your friends.
How we built it
I started by writing a detailed PRD outlining how I wanted it to look, work, and what features it needed. It got surprisingly close to being usable on the first go but still required some refinement and iteration.
Challenges we ran into
One of the main challenges was standardizing how the character interacts with different trigger zones in the game world.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
I am really proud of how the game connects to real world activity through Strava. Also quite excited about the potential to monetize it through in game billboards that live inside the world.
What we learned
I have learned that I need more tokens to bring all my other ideas to life. I also learned that Bolt is incredibly good at taking a basic prompt and getting very far with it, but building a complete experience still takes a lot of tweaking and refinement.
What's next for Pixelmate
Next up is polishing things further. Improving onboarding, refining the pixel UI, and designing better characters. Once that is done, I will launch on Product Hunt.
