Inspiration
We were inspired by the engaging experience we get from simulator games such as Grow A Garden and Mining Simulator. We wanted to connect that with coding education to make learning code fun and rewarding for elementary school kids, or anyone interested in learning how to code.
What it does
It first allows the player to create a slot to save their progress. It then provides the player with a garden of dirt patches that represent coding topics like Strings and variables. After completing a level, the player grows the plant in the dirt patch. After completing all levels in the dirt patch, the plant is in full bloom to represent that the player has grown their skills.
How we built it
We build the game using Visual Studio, React and used existing game assets by CupNooble.
Challenges we ran into
We ran into challenges merging our code between the frontend and backend. We also faced challenges in image quality and layout.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
We are proud of creating this simulator web-based game within the timeframe. We are also proud of creating a way to make education an engaging and rewarding experience for kids. There is an ongoing issue of short attention spans among kids today, we're proud that this game helps with focus because their efforts are working towards their passion and those efforts should be rewarded more.
What we learned
We learned more about working with React and creating a web-based game. We also learned how to isolate and add assets to our game.
What's next for Pixel Planters
To reward players for their coding achievements, we will set up a currency system in which players receive coins to buy seeds that teach different coding concepts.
