Inspiration
The inspiration for Pixel Patcher came from my frequent frustration with glitches in my own games. I thought about what would happen if I turned those frustrations into a game, and I created the story for Pixel Patcher, where you are a game dev trying to fix your game before launch.
How I built it
I built this game using the pygame-ce framework and the Python programming language. Obviously, Python is not a native frontend language. To get my game to work on web, I used the open-source Pyscript framework in order to compile my game into WebAssembly (WASM). I created the sound effects using Audacity, and I made the tileset, player animations, and enemy animations in MS Paint.
Challenges I ran into
One major challenge I ran into was completing the game in time for submission. I joined the hackathon and started working on the game six days before it was due, and I was rushing to finish it before the deadline.
Accomplishments that I am proud of
I am proud of the fact that I was able to built a solid game in only six days' time. While I was not able to add nearly the amount of features I wanted, I still think I was able to add a decent amount of features and gameplay. I was also proud of the glitch effect I made for some of the tiles, which really improved the visual aesthetic of the game.
What I learned
I learned to look out for and start working on Hackathons well in advance, as six days is not nearly enough time to make a game. I also learned quite a bit about sound design, and this was my first time working with sound effects like this. This was also my first Hackathon, so I learned a lot about how to ship a finished product quickly that matches certain requirements.
What's next for Pixel Patcher
If I return to this project in the future, I would like to add more levels and glitches to explore, as well as improving enemy AI and making combat more fluid and fun.
