About
Pixel art is a staple for game development, but players hate AI slop and today's image generation models still struggle getting pixel art to be "pixel perfect". We wanted to fix that by enabling users and agents to collaborate and create art in a more traditionally-accepted sense.
What it does
Pixel Art Tutor is a WebMCP-powered studio for creating pixel art (sprites, animations, characters, and tilesets). WebMCP is a strong fit because it gives agents structured access to canvas content that would otherwise be invisible to them.
Agents can read sprites as compact ASCII grids, critique artwork, paint individual pixels, fill regions, transform sprites, manage palettes, create animation frames, and build tilemaps. Humans can draw, guide, request edits, and refine the work in the same canvas.
With shared rooms via PartyKit, collaborators see edits and agent activity live (making human-agent co-creation possible where traditional browser automation would be unreliable or impossible).
How it was built
The app is made with React, TypeScript, Vite, Zustand, and PartySocket/PartyServer for real-time collaboration. On startup, the app registers ~43 imperative WebMCP tools through
document.modelContext.registerTool, plus a declarative tool for creating sprites.
All agent actions use the same store actions as the human UI, so edits remain visible, undoable, and synchronized. The app also includes a built-in critique engine, animation timeline, palette tools, tilemap editing, and game-engine exports.
Unexpected challenges
The biggest challenge was translating a visual canvas into a useful agent interface. We needed compact representations that agents could understand, precise tools for pixel-level changes, and safeguards so human edits, agent actions, undo history, and room synchronization stayed consistent.
What's next for Pixel Art Tutor
Next, we want to improve multi-agent collaboration, add stronger room permissions and conflict handling, expand the tutoring system, support more creative workflows, and make it easier to publish and share collaborative pixel-art projects.
