Inspiration

The inspiration for Pivot AI comes from the growing anxiety and uncertainty surrounding the future of work. With millions of jobs at risk of being automated by AI, countless professionals are concerned their skills will soon become obsolete. We saw a critical need for a proactive tool that does more than just list jobs; we wanted to provide a clear, empowering, and personalized roadmap for individuals to navigate this massive technological shift. Pivot AI was born from the desire to give people agency over their careers, helping them reskill and transition into secure, future-proof roles with confidence. With employers and governments investing heavily in upskilling initiatives, there’s a clear global momentum—and an urgent need—for smart, accessible solutions like Pivot AI.

What it does

Pivot AI is an application that acts as a personal career architect for professionals seeking to transition or improve their careers. At its core, the app helps users:

  1. Understand Their Profile: Through a brief onboarding questionnaire, it captures a user's skills, experience, and interests.
  2. Explore New Opportunities: It provides a "Career Compass" to discover potential future-proof careers, complete with descriptions, skill requirements, and salary expectations.
  3. Receive AI-Powered Guidance: An "AI Coach" feature provides a space for users to ask questions and receive guidance on their career path.
  4. Prepare for Interviews: A "Interviewing Practice" module helps users practice and build confidence for real-world job interviews.
  5. Build a Professional Resume: The "Resume Optimizer" leverages user data to generate a tailored resume.
  6. Stay Organized: A "Job Application Tracker" allows users to manage their job search process from start to finish.

How we built it

Our user interface is a responsive React web app, based on initial concepts prototyped with Bolt.new. The entire backend runs on Supabase, handling our database, user authentication, and serverless functions. Our AI experience is a powerful trio: OpenAI generates intelligent conversation, ElevenLabs provides the human-like voice, and Tavus creates the realistic video avatar for our mock interviews. Finally, we manage all subscriptions seamlessly with RevenueCat.

Challenges we ran into

Building with AI presented unique and fascinating challenges. Here are the main hurdles we overcame:

  • The Paradox of AI Development: Using bolt.new, we found that simple UI tweaks were often harder than complex backend tasks like architecting our database. This taught us to be strategic about when to use AI versus when to code manually.
  • Strategic Token Management: As the project grew, managing our token budget became a critical challenge. This forced us to be highly efficient and disciplined with our prompts, which ultimately made us smarter developers.
  • Navigating AI Hallucinations: We learned to debug AI "hallucinations"—subtle, hard-to-find errors in the generated code. This required a new skill of knowing when to trust the AI and when to intervene to ensure stability.

  • Built a practical reskilling tool in a short hackathon timeframe

  • Leveraged sponsors offerings (Elevenlabs, Tavus etc) to enrich the experience beyond our initial expectations

What we learned

  • AI development shifts the focus from programming details to system design—it's now about clear goals, novel ideas, and declarative thinking over low-level code.
  • Reskilling isn’t a course problem—it’s a direction problem: real goals, roles, and outcomes.

What's next for Pivot AI

  • Build a trusted and inclusive community of reskillers, companies, and educators
  • Interactive, certified career profiles to modernize career hiring in the post-AI world
  • Partner with Employers to facilitate Internal Mobility with real individual career plans to increase retention and workers' satisfaction and with schools and universities to provide career guidance and smooth workforce transitions.
