Inspiration
We wanted to make navigating Pitt's bus system easier for students. Finding the right route, checking stops, and figuring out when a bus will arrive can be frustrating, especially when you're trying to get to class on time. We wanted to bring these features together in one simple, student-friendly app.
What it does
Pitt Bus Connect is a mobile app designed to make navigating Pitt's bus system easier. The goal is to give students a simple and convenient way to find bus information and plan their trips around campus.
How we built it
We built Pitt Bus Connect using React Native and Visual Studio Code. React Native allowed us to develop the app for mobile while using JavaScript and a component-based approach to build the interface. We also used GitHub to manage our project and keep track of our code.
Challenges we ran into
One of our biggest challenges was turning our idea into a functional mobile application within the limited time of the hackathon. We also had to figure out how to structure the app and organize transportation information in a way that would be easy for students to understand and use.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
We're proud that we were able to take our idea and turn it into a working mobile application during the hackathon. We also gained hands-on experience with React Native and learned more about developing a project as a team under a deadline.
What we learned
We learned more about React Native, mobile app development, GitHub, and working collaboratively on a software project. We also learned how important it is to keep the user's experience in mind when designing an application.
What's next for Pittsburgh Transit
We would like to continue developing Pitt Bus Connect by adding more transportation information, real-time bus updates, improved route planning, notifications, and other features that could make traveling around Pitt easier for students.
