Inspiration
We were inspired by online safety games we would play in elementary school. We felt those games were very informative and fun to play, so we wanted to create our own. The graphics of our game were inspired by classic RPGs like Pokemon and Zelda.
What it does
Pirating Parrots allows the user to play a mini game to help Elizabeth by defeating Jack Parrot. While playing the game, the user is informed about piracy, thus teaching about online safety. We made this game intending to teach younger children about the dangers of piracy and improving their online safety.
How we built it
We made this game through Pygame which we coded in IntelliJ IDEA.
Challenges we ran into
Because we were so new to pygame, we had to do a lot of back-and-forth learning how to implement something and then adding it to our game.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
We're proud of how our first ever pygame came together, complete with its retro aesthetic. We're extra happy with the enemy interactions, as those were the most difficult to implement.
What we learned
Not only did we learn how to use pygame and python, we also learned how to pair-program more efficiently…and some important facts about pirating along the way that even we didn’t know!
What's next for Pirating Parrots
We hope to make our game more complicated with more mini games, so that children who play this game can learn about piracy and online safety. We also hope to give better graphics to our game to make it more aesthetically pleasing.
