Inspiration
Our group was inspired by popular rhythm games, such as osu!, which are fun to play and include a variety of components. As we started making a pirate rhythm game, we came across a lot of fun songs to include. One of them was titled "Sewer Funk" by Humans Win, and it had a very catchy beat. After listening to this song, our group got the idea of making our game based on a pirate rat in a sewer. It would be a cute concept, and fit well with the music. With this fun idea, we decided to dedicated our project to it.
What it does
Our code was designed to play a rhythm game. It has a start screen, a button to go to the game screen, which automatically goes to the end screen after a certain amount of time. Due to time constraints, we were unable to complete the code and fully implement all the functions. However, we did create all the backgrounds, icons, frame, panel, and button development.
How we built it
We built this code using Java on Replit. We also used Procreate to create the visuals, and Adobe Animate for the game demo.
Challenges we ran into
We ran into a few challenges related to formatting images and animating. Our team is new to these concepts, so we had some trouble getting used to this area of code. We also ran into a few challenges with timing. However, we worked together and worked towards finding solution and continuing our code.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
We’ve each gathered several skills from this project. We’ve learned about several different software which we can use to code (ex. Replit), as well as several libraries which we can use to get various different commands (ex. kaboom.js). We’ve also been able to combine back-end and front-end coding by creating Panels and Frames and implementing them into creating specific sets of code.
What we learned
Through this project, we learned how to import images and use buttons in Java, Replit. We also experimented with new art styles, such as pixel art. Overall, the process was a very new and challenging experience for all of us.
What's next for PiRATe Riot
Our team is excited to continue working on this project and making it a fully functional game. We are going to input the rest of the background images, the audio, the point counter, the arrows, and other aspects of the game. We all have our respective jobs, and we will assign tasks related to frontend, backend, and visuals.
