Inspiration
I grew up playing those tiny 90s brick racing games — simple screens, few lanes, and pure frustration 😅
I wanted to bring that feeling back, but with a twist: a pirate ship, cursed seas, and a daily challenge everyone shares.
What I Learned
I learned how tricky “simple” games really are: procedural generation, fair randomness, game states, UI, and game feel all matter way more than they seem.
How I Built It
I built the game in GameMaker, using a lane-based top-down system inspired by classic brick racers.
There are two modes:
- Daily Mode: a finite level generated from a daily seed
- Infinite Mode: endless gameplay with increasing difficulty
Small details like ship tilt, wake trails, and moving ocean waves were added to make it feel alive.
Challenges
The hardest parts were:
- Avoiding impossible situations
- Making buttons and overlays behave correctly
- Keeping everything readable inside Reddit’s square embed
Final Thoughts
Pirate Brick Hmas Ship is a small arcade game with old-school roots and a modern, shared challenge.
Crash once… and it’s over. ☠️
