Inspiration
In the beginning, we wanted to create a game similar to our all-time favorite childhood game: Tamagotchi. However, when we arrived at Vandy Hacks we became inspired to the idea of “reimagine banking,” and came up with the plan to create something that combined our original idea and the banking together. We decided to program a children’s banking account, and it is our hope that our program would contribute to the growth of the upcoming generation. Meet Piplup Banking –the ultimate children’s checking account!
What it does
This program is built to make learning about smart spending exciting for the children. Not only that, but our penguin banking system will be the companion that would work alongside parents / educators and make “money-talk” easier and more flexible! The program allows the parents/educators to deposit into the child account. They will be able to monitor everything that is going on in the account. Then, the child can use the money however they want, having the option to save some of their balance as well. The fish (<><) currency is earned to purchase items for the penguin (costumes, accessories, etc.) by putting their money into their savings. The child can purchase real-life items as well!
- Make fun environment for the kids
- Educate next-gen on money
- Tamagotchi themed “take care of the penguin”
- Savings and fish currency
How we built it
We used Java to create this program.
Challenges we ran into
- Limited knowledge on coding
- We started our CS journey this year as freshmen
- Lack of time and sleep (working under pressure)
Accomplishments that we're proud of
- Creating our first self-made program
- Staying focused throughout the whole hack-a-thon
- Working as a team with a common goal
What we learned
- Increase skill in integrating coding knowledge from class into semi-real-world assignment
- How to better format file so that they are easier to access within the coding community, such as GitHub
- Entrepreneurship thinking
What's next for Piplup Banking!
- Creating the actual app
- Introducing the program to children to see if they would enjoy it
