Inspiration

Our team was put into the "Communities" group, which meant that we had to come up with something that positively benefited our community. As the homelessness rates in Ventura County rise, the issue becomes more prevalent in our society. We decided to target this problem to help get these people off the streets and self-sustaining.

What it does

The website we have built is compilation of all the resources a homeless person needs to become independent. It works with their food needs, education level, job interests, and more to give them all the tools they need to succeed in life. Each page is aimed towards a specific sector that can be used to better their lives.

How we built it

We used code.org to build the initial template of the page. The project was divided up into 5 sections so each of us could focus on our personal interests within this project and complete it efficiently. After each one of the sections was completed, the whole code was compiled on Brackets, where the final formatting took place. The project was debugged, edited, and made into a complete project that is accessible and user friendly.

Challenges we ran into

One of the greatest challenges we encountered was our very limited knowledge in HTML, which was the language we were using. Because of the different syntax, it was hard to incorporate Java Script, C++, and the other languages we had a base in into our website. In addition, the wide age range in our group was a challenge to overcome, but in the end, we worked together as a team to defeat any barriers, whether it was the coding language or our age.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

We worked together to create a website that can have a big impact in society by helping the homeless community in Ventura County. Our team was able to bond and combine our different skills to accomplish the task we were given. This would initially seem daunting, but we were able to overcome our fears and challenges to work together in languages we haven't worked in before to ultimately create a product that we are all proud of.

What we learned

We learned to get along and socialize with people we had never met, and how to code around the barriers that we faced. Finding a program that worked with all of our various knowledge in coding and something that we all understood was a learning experience. The older kids acted as mentors to the younger ones, and we all learned basic coding in a new language. The greatest lesson that we learned was that we can make friends anywhere. None of us knew each other when we walked in the doors, but we grew as people and as friends to develop everlasting coding skills and friendship.

What's next for Pipeline

At the moment, Pipeline is focused on Ventura County on a limited amount of topics. Due to the time constraints placed on us, we were only able to accomplish a handful of things. With more time and energy, this product can be expanded upon and be more user-friendly to be applied in real life. We hope to implement this project within our communities to positively create change and reduce the homeless population. Our main goal would be to get the people off the streets and make them more independent and self-sustaining.
