Inspiration

I built Pip because I wanted an easier, more visual way to understand where my money goes each month and make better decisions about it.

I also wanted Pip to help with something specific to Malaysia: keeping track of tax relief expenses and their receipts. Having those records organized throughout the year can make preparing a tax return less of a chore.

What it does

Pip is a personal money manager that helps users track transactions, assets, liabilities, and recurring payments. Receipt and transaction scanning makes recording expenses faster, while bill splitting helps users settle shared expenses with friends.

Its AI chat agent lets users record transactions through conversation. The agent works exclusively through bring your own key (BYOK), so users must enter their own API key to use it.

One feature I’m especially proud of is tax relief tracking for Malaysians. Users can record relevant transactions, attach receipts, and keep them together alongside the tax relief limits. The aim is to make it easier to find the records they need when preparing their tax return.

How we built it

We built Pip with React Native, focusing on quick recording and clear money insights. We wanted everyday tasks, like adding an expense or checking spending, to feel straightforward.

We also designed a mascot with different expressions to give Pip personality. It makes the experience feel more personal, and it’s one of the parts of the app we’re most proud of.

Challenges we ran into

The biggest challenge was balancing privacy with a smooth AI experience. We had to think carefully about how the agent would work and balance between AI and user's privacy.

Operating costs and pricing were another challenge. We wanted to make Pip sustainable while keeping the price fair for users.

What we learned

Building Pip meant thinking about convenience, privacy, and cost together. Decisions about the AI experience also affected how users would get started and how we approached pricing.

We also learned how much thought goes into making financial tracking feel simple. Quick recording, clear information, and the mascot’s expressions all contribute to the experience.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

We’re especially proud of Pip’s user experience and mascot system. The interface keeps money management clear, while the mascot’s expressions give the app a personality of its own.

The Malaysian tax relief feature is another highlight for us. It gives everyday expense tracking a practical use beyond the monthly budget: keeping transactions and supporting receipts organized for tax reporting.

What's next for Pip

Next, we’ll focus on marketing, gathering user feedback, and improving Pip based on what people need.

We also want to keep improving the monthly recap video so users have a more visual way to look back at their spending and reflect on their choices.
