Inspiration
While brainstorming, Erik and I began reflect upon the issue of homelessness. Through research, we found that data on homelessness is not well shared. After reading about how data analysis was used to reduce the number of homeless veterans in Virginia, we came up with Pinnly.
What it does
Pinnly is meant to facilitate the exchange of data for both homeless people and those who wish to help them. For homeless users, the app can point them in the direction of food pantries, shelters, or even just safe areas to hang around. With all of these locations pinned and rated by other app users, we hope that people can connect and help each other to get back on their feet. On the flip side, we also hope that the data from this app can be gathered and analyzed to find patterns in aspects like homelessness demographics or reasons behind preferred gathering spots.
How we built it
We used Swift and Xcode to create the app. We worked with Google Maps and Google Places to access a user’s current location and to allow that user to pin a descriptive marker about the location.
Challenges we ran into
We had issues with accessing the user’s current location coordinates from different files.
Accomplishments that we’re proud of
We made an app without using storyboard!
What we learned
We learned more about delegates and protocols! We also learned about static variables in swift.
What's next for Pinnly
Personalized suggestions for services to suit each individual’s needs whether they are a veteran, a worker trying to support a family, or an LGBTQ youth.
