Inspiration
Looking for a project to work on today, we thought of looking at rates of crimes, weather, and other ideas. We settle on issues within the school system and the funding practices. Public data on expenditures per student is available for most of the US, and literacy rates are available by county for nearly every county. Our goal in comparing this was to look for a relationship between funding and the literacy rates in the area around a certain school district. We wanted to provide evidence that there was an underlying cause of literacy rates, and show that there is a problem that can be solved.
What it does
The site provides a comparison between two user-selected counties. The literacy and demographics are presented side by side for easy comparison. This way, a user can see their district and funds, and see local comparisons.
How we built it
We started by finding data that we could parse, setting up from a template, and adding code blocks to search the data for the given districts.
Challenges we ran into
Data is only available for about 35 states for funding, and the data is not easily compiled into a simple file. As such, comparisons between most school districts are unavailable.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
Only one of us has web experience, but we all contributed to this in a way that helped the final project run.
What we learned
We learned about different classifications of literacy and what they mean. We know why there are used, and we selected Level 3, as that is the level that a high school graduate should be able to maintain.
What's next for Pink Lemonade Literacy
We will continue to look into the district funding data to try to add more districts to the comparisons.
