It was Angela Rayner who said : "If there's a pink elephant in the room, I'll identify it and say it." Working women and minorities manke less money than men as a whole The wage gap affects more than 1/2 of the population of the United States Why we wanted to do this is beacuse we think it is an important issue
What it does
Addressing the invisible elephant in the room. Pink Elephant is a wage gap calculator made with HTML, CSS, and JavaScript taking into account the following metrics:
White women make .79 cents on the dollar Black women make .62 cents on the dollar Hispanic/latino women make .54 cents on the dollar Asian women make .90 cents on the dollar Native American women make .57 cents on the dollar
Why a Pink Elephant? Elephants symbolise health and happiness and are thought to promote spiritual wellbeing in our daily lives. Elephants are strong and nurturing, they are loyal to their family and are determined and protective. Elephants have the largest brains of any mammal on the face of the Earth. They can sense danger - for example, they're able to detect an approaching tsunami or earthquake before it hits.
Brings awareness to social inclusion problems associated with wages. The gender pay gap is wider between men and women bachelor’s degree-holders. Women with college degrees earn 72.4% of similar men. Women often choose lower-paying jobs and industries, such as social work, do most of the childcare work, and work less hours. Less-educated workers typically hold jobs that are considered interchangeable and often have less ability to obtain substantial pay raises. Example: if a woman is offered less pay than a male counterpart, or indirectly, if a woman decides to forgo a male-dominated field because she fears discrimination.
Promotes legistlative efforts like Laws that ban employers from prohibiting employees from discussing pay, creating more affordable child-care options and expanding paid family leave, or activist movements like holding peaceful protests and they also get generous donations from companies wanting to improve the income inequality.
