Pineapple Attack – Project Story
About the Project
Pineapple Attack is a quirky and fast-paced survival game built in Meta Horizon Worlds, where mutant pineapples rise up in waves to attack your home. What started as a playful idea — “What if pineapples fought back?” — turned into a fun challenge in game design, scripting, and optimization.
The vision behind the project was to mix humor with action. Instead of traditional enemies, I wanted something unexpected and funny — mutant fruits. The game begins as a simple wave shooter but will evolve into a full tower defense experience, where players strategize and defend their land with upgrades and structures.
Inspiration
The main inspiration came from two sources:
Classic wave shooters – I always loved the tension of defending against never-ending waves of enemies.
Tower defense mechanics – Games where building, upgrading, and strategizing feel just as important as shooting.
The fusion of these genres — combined with the absurd idea of pineapples turning evil — sparked the concept.
How I Built It
The development process involved several steps:
Environment Design: Built a tropical-yet-chaotic setting that feels playful but under attack.
Enemy AI: Created simple but effective fruit behaviors — chasing, swarming, and scaling difficulty.
Future Planning: Started laying the groundwork for tower defense mechanics, such as placing turrets and defenses on a grid.
What I Learned
How to optimize scripts in Horizon Worlds to prevent lag with many enemies.
The importance of balancing gameplay difficulty so waves feel challenging but not overwhelming.
How humor and theme can greatly enhance player engagement — fighting mutant pineapples is instantly memorable.
Challenges Faced
Performance Issues: Having too many active enemies caused frame drops, requiring pooling and simplified AI.
Enemy Scaling: Finding the right math formula for wave difficulty was tricky. Too steep, and players quit early. Too easy, and it became boring.
Future Tower Defense Mechanics: Designing placement systems and upgrades in Horizon Worlds has limitations, so creative scripting is needed.
What’s Next
The future of Pineapple Attack will focus on expanding into a full tower defense hybrid, letting players build defenses to protect their land while continuing to fight waves of fruity foes.
