Inspiration
Social media tracks what we post — not where we’ve truly been. We wanted to build something that encourages people to explore the real world while adding a competitive, social element. PinDrop.tech was inspired by the idea of turning landmarks into achievements and real-world exploration into a game.
What it does
PinDrop.tech is a web app that lets users upload photos of landmarks they’ve visited. Using AI-powered landmark recognition, we verify that the location is actually present in the image. Once confirmed, the visit is logged to the user’s profile, updating their total count and leaderboard ranking against friends. It transforms travel and local exploration into a fun, competitive experience.
How we built it
We built the frontend as a responsive web app with a dashboard and a leaderboard system. On the backend, we integrated Gemini AI for landmark recognition to analyze uploaded images and validate check-ins. We also used Google Maps to visually display visited landmarks and provide an interactive map view for users. Verified landmarks are stored in our database and reflected in real-time stats and rankings.
Challenges we ran into
One major challenge was ensuring accurate landmark verification while keeping response times fast. We also had to design a fair competition system that prevents duplicate or fake check-ins. Managing real-time leaderboard updates within a short hackathon timeframe was another technical hurdle.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
We’re proud that we successfully integrated AI landmark recognition into a working verification system. We built a clean user interface, a functioning leaderboard, and a competitive structure — all within 24 hours. Most importantly, we created a product that encourages real-world activity rather than passive scrolling.
What we learned
We learned how to integrate AI APIs into a live web application, handle image validation workflows, and build a competitive ranking system under time pressure. We also learned the importance of simplifying features to ship a polished MVP in a hackathon setting.
What's next for PinDrop.tech
Next, we plan to add city-based leaderboards, achievement tiers, streak systems, and landmark recommendations based on user location. We’d also like to implement social challenges and expand verification accuracy with multi-image confirmation. Long term, we envision PinDrop.tech becoming the go-to platform for competitive exploration worldwide.
