Inspiration

Chess belongs on the largest screen in the home, but most online chess products are designed around phones, browsers, notation, and precise touch input. Pinche Chess Live for Fire TV explores a simpler idea: pick up the remote and play.

We are amateur players ourselves. That perspective shaped an approachable experience where players move across the board, select a piece, see its legal destinations, and select where it goes—without needing to memorize coordinates or formal chess notation.

What it does

Pinche Chess Live for Fire TV is a social online chess experience for the living room.

Players will be able to:

  • Play complete online matches using the Fire TV remote
  • Select pieces and legal destination squares with directional controls
  • Play against opponents joining from Fire TV, mobile, web, or other supported screens
  • Keep a persistent player profile, match history, and Elo rating
  • Watch active Pinche Live chess channels
  • Follow live boards, player cameras, clocks, and match results
  • Revisit completed matches as permanent video stories

The television experience has two simple destinations: Play Chess and Watch Live.

How it works

The Fire TV client connects to the existing authoritative Pinche Chess backend. The server manages matchmaking, legal moves, synchronized game state, clocks, results, and player identity through WebSockets. It does not matter whether an opponent joins from a television, phone, or browser: every player meets on the same board.

For Fire TV, touch interaction will be translated into directional focus and select events:

  1. Move focus across the 64 squares with the remote.
  2. Press Select to choose a piece.
  3. View highlighted legal destinations.
  4. Move to a destination and press Select again.
  5. Use Back to cancel the current selection.

Compatible Bluetooth controllers, keyboards, and pointing devices can provide additional input options.

Pinche Live adds the viewing layer. Active games become channels that families and chess fans can watch from the living room. After a match, the wider PincheTulum media pipeline can preserve it as a replayable video story.

Existing foundation and hackathon work

Pinche Chess existed before the hackathon as a Flutter/web chess product with online matchmaking, an authoritative Node.js and chess.js game server, WebSocket synchronization, AI games, persistent profiles, Elo, game history, and early Pinche Live infrastructure.

The work created during the Amazon Developer Hackathon will be clearly isolated and documented. It will focus on:

  • A demo-ready Fire OS build
  • Fire TV remote and D-pad board navigation
  • Television focus states and ten-foot UI
  • Fire TV lifecycle and back-button behavior
  • Pinche Live channel browsing for television
  • Testing on an actual Fire TV device or Amazon's Fire TV/Vega simulator
  • Public source code, setup instructions, and an open-source license
  • Product feedback and a detailed friction log

Current status

The core cross-device chess platform is working. The Fire TV adaptation begins during the hackathon and this page will be updated with verified implementation details, repository links, screenshots, testing evidence, and the final English demo video.
