As a former Crisis Line volunteer, I interacted with many young adults who struggle with mental health and suicide, and use self-harm as a coping mechanism. Through these interactions, I realized that there is a lack of standardized resources for people who self-harm - much of the information is communicated through forums or word-of-mouth. We wanted to create a clinically sound, evidence based, aesthetically pleasing application for young adults in distress.
What it does
-Crisis intervention technique; easily accessible, personalized tool box -Track of effectiveness of each activity & usage rate -Graphical snapshot of quantified progress -Ability to easily share the progress with friends, family and therapists
How we built it
React and Node.js
Challenges we ran into
Piñata was conceptualized as an mobile app, but we did not have the coding expertise for iOS.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
Piñata is an original, feasible and viable application, that is focused on delivering a low-cost crisis intervention solution. Our content is rooted in research and clinical expertise.
What we learned
Creating a cohesive and thorough application was challenging given the time constraints; business considerations also weighed heavily on what was feasible.
