Inspiration

There are bulletin boards on campus, cafes, and local communities that are filled with amazing opportunities to explore, learn, and engage with where we call home. At the same time, there are always too many of them that it is difficult to keep track of, hence, we either miss or are unaware of them until they are passed.

We decided to go with the urban planning track, focusing on community development. With PinPoint, we hope to address the confusion of large poster walls in local spaces like cafes, and additionally provide a mobile bulletin board that can be accessed anywhere for residents who might live farther from these community centers.

What it does

Pin Point is a mobile platform for community development through the promotion of local events through a digital bulletin board.

In the same way, as we have a variety of interests in books, and music, PinPoint can filter events based on the data extracted from each poster by its venue, date, and time, as well as types, ranging from concerts to farmers market.

How we built it

To build Pin Point, we used Figma to prototype our design and develop the application on Visual Studio Code using React Native. Moreover, for data management, we used the Kintone platform, and for visual image character recognition we planned our future development with Tesseract.js.

Challenges we ran into

As we wanted to challenge ourselves with new programming skills and platforms, we were not able to complete our product within the time given for our data management or visual image and character recognition as we planned.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

We used React Native! We were both new to the programming language and process, but we were able to learn something new. Moreover, we are able to convey our ideas with our design prototype which we are proud of as well.

What we learned

React Native, Kintone, and Tesseract.js

What's next for Pin Point

We plan on continuing to work on the poster details data management and the extracting of it with image recognition.
