Inspiration

Sharing our personal stories in struggling with mental health we all agreed that the for many young adults, our first line of support is our friends. However many peers feel inadequately equipped to help their friends. And there are no aggregate easy to use online resources.

What it does

We are targeting those who are supporting loved ones with mental health issues. Our aim is to empower people to enhance face-to-face human connection. Note that Pillar is a mobile webapp.

Our app has two major features

Communication Guide: Our techniques are based on evidence based treatments, such as cognitive behavioral therapy and interpersonal psychotherapy. We are NOT trying to computerize conversations and or train peers as therapists. Rather, we are trying to be a pillar and support system for those who have those conversations.

Notes and reminders: Users can write notes to reflect on their conversations and experiences with friends who dealing with mental health issues. They can also set reminders to check in on their friends.

Scalable: Easily build out modules for other issues such as anxiety or substance use disorder and guides for other techniques such as motivational interviewing.

How I built it

We came up with a viable product flow and design mocks and built it with React.js, node.js and Twilio

Challenges I ran into

Because the topic was so broad it was at times challenging to narrow the scope down and come up with a concrete product, but through perseverance we succeeded

Accomplishments that I'm proud of

We managed to come up with smooth mocks and product by the end of the first night and pulled an all nighter to complete the code for the most important vertical

What I learned

What's next for Pillar

The goal of Pillar is to help loved ones of those suffering from depression become stronger supports. This requires a delicate balance between giving care and self care. Other than iterating on how to better help someone give care, we want to also focus on helping caregivers care for themselves and balance their lives so they can continue to provide for their loved ones without losing themselves.
