Inspiration
We were inspired by the difficulty many people face when trying to find the right mentor for their career goals. Searching through profiles is often time-consuming, and it can be difficult to know which person has the experience and skills that best match your needs.
We wanted to create a platform that makes mentorship more accessible by combining personalized matching, career guidance, scheduling, and communication into one place.
What it does
MentorHer is an AI-powered mentorship and career discovery platform that helps users find mentors based on their career goals, skills, interests, and aspirations.
Users can create profiles, discover recommended mentors, explore personalized career paths, schedule mentorship sessions, communicate with mentors, and participate in a community for knowledge sharing.
The platform is designed to support both mentors and mentees through personalized dashboards and tools for managing their mentorship experience.
How we built it
We built MentorHer as a full-stack web application using Next.js and React for the frontend and Node.js for backend functionality.
We used Firebase and MongoDB to handle application data and user-related functionality. AI-powered functionality is used to support mentor matching, career-path recommendations, and personalized guidance.
We also integrated scheduling and real-time communication capabilities so that users can move from discovering a mentor to actually arranging and conducting a mentorship session.
The interface was designed to be responsive and easy to navigate, with separate experiences for mentors and mentees.
Challenges we ran into
One of our biggest challenges was bringing several different systems together into a single platform. User authentication, profiles, AI recommendations, scheduling, dashboards, community features, and real-time communication all needed to work together reliably.
Another challenge was designing a useful matching experience. Simply matching users based on one characteristic would not provide meaningful recommendations, so we had to consider multiple aspects of a user's goals, skills, and aspirations.
Working within a limited development timeline also meant that we had to prioritize the most important features and continuously test the application as new functionality was added.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
We are proud of building a complete mentorship experience rather than limiting the project to a simple mentor directory.
MentorHer brings together mentor discovery, AI-assisted recommendations, career guidance, scheduling, communication, personalized dashboards, and community interaction in one platform.
We are especially proud of creating a foundation that can be expanded into a more personalized career-development ecosystem.
What we learned
We learned that building an AI-powered product requires careful consideration of both the technology and the user experience. An intelligent recommendation is only valuable when it helps users make better decisions.
We also gained experience with full-stack development, database integration, authentication, API integration, AI functionality, scheduling, real-time communication, responsive UI development, and debugging a multi-feature application.
Most importantly, we learned how to prioritize features and make architectural decisions while working under a hackathon deadline.
What's next for MentorHer
Our next step is to make the matching system more personalized and accurate. We want to incorporate additional information about users' experience, skills, interests, goals, and previous mentorship interactions.
We also want to improve the career-path generator, enhance scheduling and communication, expand the community features, and introduce additional AI-powered career tools.
Our long-term goal is for MentorHer to become a complete career and mentorship ecosystem that helps people discover the right mentors, guidance, resources, and opportunities at the right time.
