Inspiration
Pierrot have become a recent fixation of mine; their clothing, hats, makeup, and expression allow much flexibility when it comes to creativity. And after discovering @maxmckerlie_art on Instagram, their creative takes with pierrot, it made me realize that I, too, would love to try making my own creative renditions.
What it does
At the moment, they do not do much. Their sole purpose is for the viewer to interpret their expressions on a personal level and then potentially become attached to one of them.
How I built it
Many, many hours spent researching historical articles about pierrot's cultural impacts and outfits, along with finding visual references online. Then several more hours sketching, ideating, and formulating different outfits and expressions along with working on a limited color palette for cohesiveness.
Challenges I ran into
The biggest challenge was my wrist cramping regularly over the span of 4 days that I was able to work on this project.
Accomplishments that I'm proud of
Each pierrot has it's own identity. I have a tendency to struggle with outfits and clothes, typically resulting in original characters having very limited wardrobes. But with them, I was able to explore different pathways and it forced me to focus much more on overall silhouettes.
What I learned
The importance of silhouettes and how to translate larger scale concepts into smaller icons that still maintain the same shapes and energy while being cuter.
What's next for Pierrot Concept
Though they were originally created for a 2D fighting game, I think that their foreseeable future might be in an adventure RPG in a circus with visual novel elements.
