Inspiration
Inspired by the psychology lessons we took in the previous semesters, our team of 3 Business Administration students wanted to challenge ourselves to use technology and create something for better mental health well-being. In this period of COVID-19, the need for better mental health is more prominent than ever before. In a time where we are all connected mostly via the Internet and overwhelmed with Zoom fatigue, we hope to create something accessible and remind everyone to take a breather, to have a greater Piece (peace) of Mind.
What it does
When installed, Piece of Mind is accessible the minute one opens their Internet browser. This web page landing browser shows itself every time a new tab is opened as well. The minimalist page wishes the user a great day and greets with an inspiring quote. The user is also allowed to rate their feeling at that point in time. And according to their ratings, they will be directed to other resources to help them feel better. People feeling great or just average will be recommended some music to listen to or some comedy clips for laughs. People who are feeling down or think they are on the verge of breaking down and need help would be directed to meditation resources and helplines. Piece of Mind gets users to rate their feelings and be aware of them. It will help users by responding to their feelings with the relevant mental health resources.
How we built it
Piece of Mind is built mainly on HTML.
Challenges we ran into
As business administration students passionate about mental health well-being, coding was something very new to us. It was our very first time trying to code using HTML. As beginners, we came across huge amounts of obstacles in running our codes. Our codes did not work from time to time and we had to consult countless online coding resources in order to debug. There were also many ideas that we wanted to put into Piece of Mind but were very much limited by our little knowledge of HTML.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
We are proud to have made it this far with a coding language we are completely new to. We are also proud that we are able to create a page that relates to mental health, an issue we are very much interested in. As psychology students, it was good to put what we have learnt theoretically into practice and see what we can do to help people.
What we learned
This Hackathon has taught us many new and exciting things. UI/UX and coding were definitely some of the skills that we have picked up and applied in our final product. There was also eye-opening sharing of how tech is integrated into mental health whereas coding was to make data predictions and reach out to people who are potentially depressed. This was really nice as the identification of depressed people were made easier and help can be given to them on time. Other than the technical skills, we also gained a clearer understanding about mental health, for example the mentioning of some tips we can adopt to cope with stress and depression as well as how we can reach out to friends around and help them if they are in need. As we will definitely be dealing with stress in life, knowing these tips can be really beneficial to us.
What's next for Piece of Mind
Moving forward, being able to randomly generate quotes each time a new tab is opened would be a bonus for our product. Additionally, a mood journal that can be added would allow the user to track his or her mood over the days, months or even years. This may help detect any tendencies for depression, anxiety or any other related mental health problems as well.
