Inspiration
Students are constantly stressed out over their assignments for their myriad of classes and they often find it difficult to keep track of which assignments are due on a certain day. Students don't always have assignment planners or a writing utensil with them while they'll almost always have their cell phone. As a result, we have introduced a way to keep track of assignments on phones in a visually aesthetic way.
What it does
Piece of Cake is an android app that allows users to keep track of deadlines for their studies, athletics, clubs, amount of sleep and anything else going on with their lives. It has a simple interface that allows even younger students can use it with ease. Each task is represented by an adorable cupcake with chunks being bitten off it as the deadline approaches.
How we built it
We built the app using Android Studio and we used Adobe Photoshop to make all original graphics.
Challenges we ran into
All three members of our group were inexperienced with Android Studio so we had to learn it in less than 24 hours. We also had little experience with coding in a practical setting, since before, all of us had only coded in the classroom setting. In addition, we were completely unfamiliar with app development. Moreover, since creating graphics took much longer than we expected, we ran into problems with prioritizing and time management in the project.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
We have a functioning app that is able to create cupcakes. Also, we are proud of the graphics in the app.
What we learned
We learned about basic app development and how to use Android Studio. We also gained insight on how to work as a group, which will be important for future internships and jobs.
What's next for Cupcake Planner
Next, we will create an algorithm that will calculate the time between dates and divide the time into equal sections so a bite of the cupcake will disappear for each time period. Right now, we are using arbitrary values of time for the purpose of the short demonstration.
