Inspiration
Inspired by the need for inclusive technology, PictoPass was created to simplify digital access for people regardless of literacy or language proficiency, especially aiding the illiterate and non-native speakers.
What it does
PictoPass replaces text-based authentication with a symbol and pattern-based system. Users register using universally recognizable symbols and secure their accounts with a sequence of pattern locks, making logins intuitive and accessible.
How we built it
We built PictoPass focusing on user-friendly interface design and intuitive interaction. The system integrates a symbol-based registration process with a secure, three-step pattern lock mechanism for authentication. Our approach prioritized simplicity and inclusivity, ensuring the platform was accessible to users of all literacy levels.
In addition to focusing on the user-facing interface, we meticulously constructed a robust authentication backend API to complement PictoPass's intuitive symbol-based registration and authentication process; employing MongoDB for secure data storage with hashing and salting techniques to encrypt sensitive user information. As well as leveraging RedisDB for swift token validation, our API optimizes speed while thwarting threats like rainbow table attacks through rate limiting, ensuring a secure, high-performance system.
Challenges we ran into
Creating an intuitive yet secure system without text was challenging. Ensuring the symbols were universally understandable and the pattern lock was robustly secure required extensive testing and iteration.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
We're proud of designing an authentication system that's not only secure but also genuinely accessible. PictoPass has the potential to significantly enhance digital inclusivity, bridging the gap for users often marginalized in the digital realm.
What we learned
We gained insights into the importance of inclusive design and the challenges of creating universally understandable symbols. We also learned about balancing simplicity with security in authentication systems.
What's next for PictoPass
We plan to refine PictoPass further, exploring more symbol options and enhancing security. Potential integration with various platforms and expanding its user base are our next steps towards making digital access more inclusive globally.
