Inspiration
Tetris is a fun game, and so we decided to make this game in the 8-bit game engine, pico-8.
What it does
Blocks fall from the sky, and lock onto the board when they land onto the floor or another piece. Making a whole line of them clears it and earns you points. Clearing four lines at once earns you the most points. As you clear more lines, you level up and the gravity gets faster. Clearing lines consecutively also earns you more points.
How we built it
We made it in the pico-8 game engine. We had to hard code everything in the game. We didn't use any sprites, it was all cell-based.
Challenges we ran into
The rotation system was challenging to make. In addition, making the ghost piece that shows where the piece will land was also difficult.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
The rotation system, ghost piece, and score were the hardest parts and we are proud that we implemented it. Also, recreating tetris in 8-bit through pico-8 is also something we are proud of, as pico-8 has limited resolution, colors, system performance, and most importantly, limited code length.
What we learned
Pico-8 is a great game engine for game jams and hackathons
What's next for Picotetris
We will add t-spins!
