Inspiration
Pickmen & Co. brainstormed ideas on how they could create and help the current state of the California Wildfires. After coming to a consensus, the team decided that a website that would have current updates, live reports, and ways to give and receive help, would help support those affected by the fires. By utilizing HTML, CSS, and JavaScript, the team created a helpful resource website called Pickmen & Co. California Wildfire Resource Site.
What it does
Our website provides resources in reporting a fire as well as providing and receiving help to those that have been affected.
How I built it
The Pickmen & Co. team created the website by utilizing HTML, CSS, JavaScript, and external API's. The programs used to organize the team were Visual Studio Code, GitHub, and Trello.
Challenges I ran into
Three out of the four-team members were beginner hackers and first-time attendees to a hackathon. Our team members were introduced to coding for the first time and were unaware of using computer languages such as HTML and using source control such as GitHub. We also endured challenges with implementing API's specifically regarding RSS feeds.
Accomplishments that I'm proud of
Having a multipage website with a navigation bar that redirects the user to the various resource tabs. We are proud to have built this website from scratch without using frameworks/templates and having three beginners and first-time hackers.
What I learned
Our team learned computer languages such as HTML, CSS, and JavaScript. The team became more familiarized with collaborating with version control and UI designing.
What's next for Pickmen & Co. California Wildfire Resource Site
Pickmen & Co plans to connect a database to the website, implementing data generation on the map and air quality based on current location, and creating a statistics page regarding families and wildlife.
