Inspiration
Our journey began in a classroom where four freshmen shared a common concern for the environment and a passion for technology. The sight of litter-strewn streets in our beloved city of San Francisco was both disheartening and a call to action. We saw an opportunity to leverage technology for social good, to not only address the issue of cleanliness in the city but also to engage the community in a collective effort to make San Francisco shine again. Thus, 'picKlean' was born, a platform designed to mobilize citizens and government agencies alike in a united effort to clean up our city.
What We Learned
Throughout the hackathon, our team embarked on a steep learning curve. We dived deep into the world of front-end development, mastering HTML, CSS, and JavaScript to bring our vision to life. We learned the importance of user experience design, ensuring that 'picKlean' was not only functional but also user-friendly and accessible to all San Franciscans. Beyond technical skills, we learned the value of teamwork, communication, and time management - essential ingredients for transforming an idea into reality under tight deadlines.
What it does
'picKlean' empowers users to contribute to the cleanliness of San Francisco by allowing them to photograph and report areas littered with trash. These reports, including images and location data, are uploaded to a centralized platform accessible by volunteers and municipal workers. Users motivated by social work can locate and clean reported areas, receiving perks for their contributions. Meanwhile, city officials can use the data to prioritize cleaning efforts and better understand pollution patterns.
How we built it
We focused on front-end development to ensure that 'picKlean' was accessible and user-friendly. Using HTML, CSS, and JavaScript, we created a responsive web application that allows users to easily report littered locations. We build a static website.
Challenges we ran into
One of the primary challenges was implementing the backend which is merging the data and connecting it to the database and Also the creation and working of API keys was another issue we faced..
Accomplishments that we're proud of
We're proud of bringing 'picKlean' from concept to a functional prototype, demonstrating the feasibility of our idea. Successfully publishing website, despite the technical hurdles, was a significant achievement. Most importantly, we've laid the groundwork for a platform that could genuinely contribute to the cleanliness and environmental health of San Francisco.
What we learned
This project was a profound learning experience in both technical and soft skills. Technically, we gained hands-on experience with front-end development tools and much about backend as well. We also learned the importance of clear communication and teamwork, especially when navigating the challenges of a hackathon. The project underscored the potential of technology to address environmental issues and the value of community engagement in public welfare initiatives.
What's next for picKlean
Moving forward, 'picKlean' aims to enhance its platform by integrating more robust backend features for better data management and analysis. We plan to develop a mobile app to increase accessibility and user engagement. Collaborating with local government and environmental organizations will be crucial for expanding our impact. Additionally, we're exploring innovative incentives to motivate users, such as gamification and partnerships for rewards. Ultimately, 'picKlean' seeks not only to clean up San Francisco but also to inspire similar initiatives in cities worldwide.
