Inspiration

Many students have ambitions and interests, but they often don't know where to start.

Some students don't have a goal yet; they know they want to do something meaningful but don't know the options or path

Other students have goals but don't know the path to achieve their goals; one might say, "I want to build rockets," but have no path to reach that goal

What I built

Pick My Path is a career discovery and planning tool targeted at students aged 12-20.

Instead of starting with a massive question like "What career do you want?", students can start with:

  • An idea or passion
  • A career they'd want to explore
  • A global challenge they care about
  • A career exploration process

This is split up into: Goal, then profile, then a skill map, and finally the career path.

The goal is to transform curiosity into a career journey. This can be seen in the design all throughout the website with phrases like "From curiosity to..."

How I built it

Pick My Path was built using React, TypeScript, HTML, and CSS.

Using Codex 5.6, I was able to quickly iterate, helping with:

  • Designing the structure
  • Implementing user navigation and flow
  • Building the interactive skill map
  • Debugging

The main design choice was avoiding a typical AI chat interface and, instead, when using GPT 5.6, to have it as a reasoning engine.

Challenges I faced

One of the biggest challenges I faced was designing a journey for students that could be at completely different areas of career exploration, making me have to factor in a lot more than a simple question.

Additionally, turning this complex concept into a simple user interface. Career planning requires considering many variables, but the interface had to be approachable for younger students.

Throughout the entirety of development, Codex massively sped up iteration by allowing me to test all sorts of ideas quickly and efficiently. This was extremely important to me as I joined late and was a significant time disadvantage.
