Inspiration

I wanted to create a convenience app for people that allows people to take a picture of handwritten text and convert it to digital text for easy editing. This could really come in handy in a school setting as well as everyday life.

What it does

It allows users to take or upload a picture of text and it will use an OCR (Optimal Character Recognition) algorithm to convert the picture to digital text. The text can then be sent through email, shared on Facebook, or uploaded to a Google Drive Document.

How I built it

I learned Swift by myself and used Xcode to build it. I worked on it in chunks over a period of time and I am still working on the OCR algorithm.

Challenges I ran into

It was hard to integrate Google Apps Script into the app and I had to import many files and debug many connection issues. Also, the OCR algorithm is especially difficult as it has to produce very accurate results in order to be useful.

Accomplishments that I'm proud of

I took an online Machine Learning Course taught by Professor Ng. Also, the uploading document feature is very convenient.

What's next for Pic-to-Word

I am still working on the handwriting recognition algorithm using neural networks. After that, I hope to release it on the iPhone app store as soon as possible. Then I will try to make an Android version to publish that as well.
