Inspiration

As students, our team often found ourselves caught up in assignments and exams, leaving no time to shop for groceries. This led to expensive takeout meals—a burden many young adults face today. We wanted to create a solution for anyone who, like us, finds themselves with only a few ingredients left in the fridge and no time for a store run.

What it does

Pic-A-Recipe is a mobile app that uses image recognition to identify ingredients. Simply snap a photo of what you have, and the app will generate a list of those items. An AI then suggests three recipes based on what's available, helping users turn leftovers into meals.

How we built it

We developed Pic-A-Recipe using React Native and Expo for cross-platform support, integrating Gemini AI for ingredient analysis, and the FoodAdvisor API to pull relevant recipe data.

Challenges we ran into

Our biggest challenge was finding a reliable API that could accurately identify and categorize ingredients from photos. After extensive research, we discovered Foodvisor API, which met our needs perfectly.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

We’re proud of delivering a solution that can improve the lives of busy individuals by reducing food waste and saving money. Additionally, we take pride in the intuitive and visually appealing user interface that enhances the overall experience.

What we learned

This was our first time developing a mobile app, so we not only learned mobile development but also became cross-platform developers, thanks to the versatility of React Native and Expo. This experience has expanded our skills and strengthened our adaptability.

What's next for Pic-A-Recipe

Our next step is deploying Pic-A-Recipe to the Apple App Store and Google Play Store. We believe the app’s practicality and potential can benefit a wide audience, and we’re excited to make it accessible to everyone.
