Inspiration

We wanted to create a PI mystery that feels urgent and personal... where every choice in your investigation matters. The world of a nighttime private investigator racing against dawn gave us the perfect framework for a branching mystery where players must piece together clues while sensing something isn't quite right.

What it does

PI Nightsky is a branching mystery adventure where players become an owl private investigator investigating a missing resident case. When young Starbler goes missing from Cluster 7B, his grandmother Petunia calls for help. Players use PI's enhanced hearing and sight to investigate the scene, interview witnesses, and follow leads through the city before the sun rises.

Each investigative choice reveals different clues, opening new paths through the mystery. Players decide which leads to follow, which questions to ask, and how to piece together the truth from fragmented information.

How we built it

Using YouTube's interactive video infrastructure, we created investigation sequences where players choose how to examine scenes and pursue leads. Different sensory abilities reveal different clues, creating multiple valid paths through the mystery based on player choices.

Challenges we ran into

Mystery stories are hard to make interactive without breaking the pacing. We needed players to feel like PIs actively solving the case rather than passive observers watching it unfold. Balancing freedom of investigation with narrative momentum required careful structuring of when clues appear and which paths remain open.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

We created a mystery where investigation choices genuinely matter. Players using different detection methods or following different leads discover the truth through their own path rather than being funneled through a single solution. The owl PI persona gives players tangible abilities that feel meaningful to the investigation.

What we learned

PI stories work best when players have agency over how they gather information, not just what conclusion they reach. Giving players tools (enhanced senses, questioning techniques) that reveal different aspects of the mystery creates more engagement than simply presenting clues in sequence.

The story continues beyond this first case as PI unravels the larger mystery behind what happened in Cluster 7B. Future chapters will explore the conspiracy she's uncovered and the choices she must make to protect the city.
