After major orthopaedic surgery, much of a patient’s recovery happens at home, yet reports suggest up to 70% of patients don’t do their home exercise programmes properly. We built Physio-Assist to help physiotherapists keep patients on track between appointments. The app uses the patient’s webcam and MediaPipe pose estimation to check their form and track range of motion over time. It turns a physio’s SOAP notes into a workout plan through an AI API and reminds patients when a session is due. We spent the first half hour brainstorming, then agreed a plan and split the work into the AI planner, the exercise tracking and the frontend. We used AI tools to help us build quickly and worked in parallel on separate GitHub branches. Most of us were new to coding, so we learned Git commands, branching and testing, how to hook up an API and how to use MediaPipe as we went. I’d never coded before and ended up writing backend functions, which I’m proud of, and as a team we’re proud that everyone got involved in every part of the project rather than sticking to one corner of it.
