Inspiration

As a lifelong gardener in Oregon, I grew frustrated with chemical pesticides harming bees and my kids’ playspace. Watching neighbors struggle to ID pests without toxic solutions sparked the idea: create a tool that combines photo recognition with trusted organic methods—rooted in EU/US gardening zones and pollinator protection.

What it does

NaturalPestControl lets gardeners snap/upload pest photos for instant ID, access curated organic remedies (companion planting, beneficial insects, homemade sprays), view zone-specific planting calendars, check 7-day pest forecasts, share tips in a chemical-free community, and find certified organic supplies.

How we built it

We built the mobile-first app with React for the frontend, Python/TensorFlow for image recognition, and Node.js for backend logic. We integrated weather/geolocation APIs to tailor forecasts/calendars to US/EU zones, used PostgreSQL for user/community data, and AWS for scalable image processing.

Challenges we ran into

Fine-tuning the pest recognition model to hit 85% accuracy for regional pests (e.g., EU powdery mildew vs. US aphid strains) was tough. We also struggled with balancing mobile performance (3-second ID results) while supporting large image uploads, and moderating community content to enforce chemical-free guidelines.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

We achieved 85%+ pest ID accuracy, built a fully mobile-responsive design that works seamlessly on iOS/Android, and curated region-specific organic solutions that prioritize pollinator safety. The community hub now has active user sharing of real-world organic pest control wins.

What we learned

We deepened our understanding of EU/US organic certification standards, climate-driven pest behavior, and accessible UX design for gardeners of all ages. We also learned how to balance AI efficiency with ethical, eco-focused product design—centering pollinator and family safety above all.

What's next for this project

We’ll expand to include more regional pest species for EU/US zones, add localized organic supply partnerships, test offline functionality for rural gardeners, and integrate user-submitted solution effectiveness ratings to refine our remedy recommendations.
